Let me guess. You opened the business, and you are still running some of it through your personal credit card or bank account. Product costs here, a customer payment there, a little Venmo sprinkled in. Fine for now, right? It is not. And I mean that kindly.
Commingling is the word we accountants use for mixing business and personal money in one place. It feels harmless when you are small. It is not. It causes two big problems, and both get worse the longer you wait.
Problem one is legal. Remember that liability wall your LLC built? Commingling knocks holes in it. If your business and personal finances look like one blurry pile, a court can decide the LLC was never truly separate from you. Lawyers call it piercing the corporate veil. In plain terms, someone suing your peptide company could reach right past the business and go after your house, your car, your savings, the exact things you formed the LLC to protect. You paid for a wall. Do not leave the door propped open.
Problem two is money and sanity, mostly at tax time. When everything flows through one account, every transaction turns into a question. Was that Amazon charge inventory or a birthday gift? Was that deposit a customer order or your cousin paying you back for dinner? Multiply that by a thousand transactions and you have got days of detective work, or a fat bill from someone like me doing the detective work for you. Either way, you pay.
And here is the quieter cost. Missed deductions. When business expenses hide inside personal spending, they get forgotten. That shipping charge, that lab testing fee, that software subscription, all legitimate write-offs, gone because nobody could find them in the pile. You end up paying tax on money you never needed to.
So what is the fix? It is almost embarrassingly simple.
Open a business bank account. Open a business card. Run every dollar of business income and every business expense through those, and nothing personal. That is the whole trick. When you want to pay yourself, move money from the business account to your personal one on purpose, and note that you did. Clean in, clean out.
If you are an LLC, you will usually need an EIN, which is just your business tax ID, to open the account. It is free from the IRS and takes about ten minutes online. (Not sure what entity type to select? See my article here about selecting your organization type). Bring your formation paperwork (including your EIN, articles of organization/incorporation, your operating agreement, and business license) to the bank and you are set.
Now, a peptide-specific heads up. Banks in this space can be skittish. Some will close an account the moment they figure out what you sell, same as payment processors do. So be straight about your business when you open the account, and do not be shocked if you need to shop around or look at banks that work with high-risk industries. Getting shut down is annoying on its own. Getting shut down with your personal money tangled inside is a genuine emergency.
Once the accounts are clean and separate, something nice happens. Your books can be clean too. This is where a bookkeeper earns their keep, because now they are sorting good data instead of untangling a knot. Solid books tell you your real margin, your real cash position, and whether that shiny new product line is making money or quietly bleeding it. You cannot see any of that through a mixed-up account.
I know this feels like admin when you would rather be selling. But clean books from day one make everything downstream easier, and I do mean everything. December you will not thank present you for putting it off. Trust me on this one.
Separate your money. Then go build the thing.
